As the urban center of a growing metropolitan region, the District faces fundamental questions about how to ensure that residents and visitors alike can efficiently and comfortably reach all parts of the city. The solutions to these questions offer stark choices in terms of their potential environmental impact. The issue of transportation not only includes choices between transportation modes, but also the relationship between transportation and development density, climate change impact and land uses.

  • The District ranks 1st nationwide in terms of walkability, according to the Brookings Institute.
  • The District ranks 2nd in the nation in heavy rail ridership with over one million daily riders.
  • 96% of residents live within ¼ of a mile of a public transit stop.
  • goDCgo.com: A comprehensive resource by the District Department of Transportation on transportation options throughout the city. The site includes sustainable options such as mass transit, bicycling, car sharing, and carpooling.
  • District of Columbia Pedestrian Master Plan: Conducted by the District Department of Transportation, this plan offers a vision for improving pedestrian access and conditions across the city.

  • SmartBike DC: The District is the first American city to implement self-service bicycle rentals.  Details on where and how to rent public bicycles can be found on this site.

  • Hybrid Vehicle Excise Tax Exemption: The District offers an excise tax exemption and reduced registration fees for qualifying hybrid vehicles.  This Department of Motor Vehicles site offers more details. 

  • Green Highways Partnership: Green Highways incorporate environmental practices in order to reduce runoff, preserve wildlife and green space and employ energy and resource efficiency during construction. The District Department of Transportation has begun employing green highway techniques in select projects.

  • Great Streets Program: The Great Streets program seeks to revitalize major urban corridors by improving transportation options, increasing streetscape attractiveness, and attracting businesses and residents to the area. While Great Streets has general environmental benefits in terms of encouraging smarter land use, this site focuses on planned transportation improvements in these corridors.
