History

In November 2000, during “The City Is Mine: Youth Summit,” the Mayor met with more than 1,000 young people to listen to their suggestions about improving the District. One of the overwhelming messages was the need to change the way young people interact with their government. The Mayor signed legislation establishing DC Youth Advisory Council in April of 2002.

Mission

The overall purpose of the Youth Advisory Council is to give voice to the District’s youth in advising key leadership in the city about polices, programs and actions that affect youth. Through this work, the council will be influential in ensuring that decisions that affect young people have been carefully considered and incorporate their concerns and perspectives. The council will work to bridge the gap between adults and youth, fostering a greater sense of unity, communication and partnership throughout the city.
