Inauguration Day, January 20, 2005

Inauguration Day 2001Plans have been underway for the 55th Inauguration Day celebration for months.

More law enforcement will be on hand for this inauguration than any other in American history. It’s a big day for Washington, and an even bigger one for the nation.

Security Measures
The US Secret Service, Metropolitan Police, US Capitol Police, and other local and federal agencies are providing an unprecedented level of security for the Inauguration.
  • All parade and event attendees are subject to a thorough security screening before entering any of the Inaugural event sites.
  • Many items are prohibited from event sites, including backpacks, coolers, golf umbrellas and sign supports.
The Secret Service website provides more information about security screening entry points, prohibited items and other security matters.

Map of Parade Route and Road Closures
A large section of downtown Washington will be closed to vehicular traffic for Inauguration events. View a map of street closures, the parade route and spectator checkpoints. The Metropolitan Police Department lists street closure details, which began Sunday, January 16. Use the Birds-Eye Tour to locate city landmarks and venues. Taking a cab to the day's festivities? Calculate the cost of your taxi ride.

Metro
Metro will close two of its stations until late-afternoon: Archives/Navy Memorial and Smithsonian. View Metro's Inauguration Day brochure*.

Public Events
In addition to the parade and swearing-in ceremony, Wednesday's A Celebration of Freedom, a musical program followed by fireworks on the Ellipse, is open to the public.

For more information on the 55th Inauguration, visit the official website. Inaugural events also are listed on the citywide calendar.

If you're not attending but are still in the spirit, make a point to visit one of the timely presidential exhibits at the National Archives, the Library of Congress and the National Museum of American History

Government Office Closures
DC and federal government offices will be closed January 20. The Department of Motor Vehicles will be closed for Inauguration Day. All DMV facilities will reopen Friday, January 21.

School Closures
All DC Public Schools will be closed January 20.

Library Closures
All DC Public Library locations will be closed January 20.
